Vancouver, Wash. – A short section of Northeast Salmon Creek Street east of Washington State University Vancouver will close next week so a contractor can shore up an unstable roadside.

Tapani Inc., a Battle Ground-based contractor working for Clark County Public Works, will repair about 50 feet of eroded stream bank immediately east of Northeast 50th Avenue.

The contractor will use riprap and gabion baskets, which are wire baskets filled with rock, to reinforce the stream bank. To minimize effects on fish and other aquatic life, the contractor will not be allowed to work in Salmon Creek until August.

Other improvements will extend 60 feet on either side of the unstable bank to better anchor the area to stable ground. A guardrail and precast concrete barrier will be installed.

The short section of Northeast Salmon Creek Street is scheduled to close Monday, July 24, with construction wrapping up in the fall. A map showing how drivers can bypass the construction zone is posted on the county’s website at www.clark.wa.gov/public-works.

Clark County has notified police, fire and ambulance agencies of the upcoming construction, as well as the U.S. Postal Service.

The county awarded a $632,240 construction contract to Tapani, which submitted the lowest of three bids received. More than 85 percent of design, construction and other costs will be paid by a $650,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
