Vancouver, Wash. – Construction will start this week on a major project to widen, connect and improve Northeast 10^th Avenue, including building a bridge over Whipple Creek.

Cascade Bridge, LLC of Vancouver will improve Northeast 10^th Avenue from Northeast 154^th Street north to Northeast 164^th Street. The project will add one travel lane in each direction, a center turn lane, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and facilities to collect and treat polluted storm runoff. Water and sanitary sewer lines will be constructed as part of the project.

A new two-lane, 450-foot steel and concrete bridge will span the current gap at Whipple Creek. The bridge will be nearly 48 feet above Whipple Creek and will be built to last 75-100 years.

Northeast 10^th Avenue will be closed to most traffic between Northeast 154^th Street and Northeast 164^th Street on both sides of the Whipple Creek canyon. Area residents, emergency vehicles and deliveries will have access, although drivers might encounter delays.

During winter 2017-2018, construction will slow for two to four months while newly graded and built-up soil, often called fill, settles.

Clark County awarded a $14.62 million contract to Cascade Bridge, which submitted the lowest of the eight bids received for the project. The contractor’s bid was $1.54 million lower than the county’s $16.16 million estimate.

Construction is expected to wrap in fall 2018. A related project, improving Northeast 10^th Avenue from Northeast 149^th Street to Northeast 154^th Street, is scheduled to begin in 2020.
