Vancouver, Wash. – The next major project in a multiyear effort to improve the Northeast 119th Street corridor will begin Monday when a contractor closes a one-mile section of the street to through traffic.
McDonald Excavating Inc., a Washougal-based contractor working for Clark County, will widen Northeast 119th Street between Northeast 50th and Northeast 72nd avenues to a two-lane minor arterial with a center turn lane. The contractor will add sidewalks and bicycle lanes and build facilities to collect and treat polluted storm runoff.
During construction, this section of Northeast 119th Street will remain open to local residents, emergency responders, school buses and delivery vehicles. Through traffic should use alternate routes to bypass the area. A map of alternate routes is on the county’s website at www.clark.wa.gov/public-works/ne-119th-street.
The project includes water line improvements for Clark Public Utilities, sewer line improvements for Clark Regional Wastewater District and utility upgrades for Clark Public Utilities, NW Natural and CenturyLink.
Construction is scheduled to wrap up in fall 2018.
The project is the latest in the past decade to upgrade Northeast 119th Street and create a modern east-west corridor across the urban area north of Vancouver. Previous projects:
Widened and improved Northeast 119th Street to two travel lanes in each direction and a center turn lane from west of Northeast 72nd Avenue to east of Northeast 87th Avenue. The project also replaced an undersized culvert for Curtin Creek under Northeast 119th Street.
Upgraded the intersection of Northeast 119th Street and Northeast 50th Avenue, including providing left-turn lanes in all four directions. The project also shaved down a hill on Northeast 119th Street east of Northeast 50th Avenue to improve sight distance and safety.
Construction is scheduled to begin next year on a related project: widening and improving Northeast 119th Street, from Northeast 87th Avenue to east of Northeast 112th Avenue, to two travel lanes in each direction and a center turn lane.
