Vancouver, Wash. – Applications are being accepted for the 2018 Master Composter/Recycler training program. The training provides information and resources on composting, recycling, green cleaning, green building, water quality and other aspects of sustainable living.
The 10-week class, sponsored by Public Health’s Solid Waste and Environmental Outreach, meets Wednesdays beginning Jan. 24 and running through March 28. Classes are 6–8:30 p.m.
The training is offered at no cost in exchange for 30 hours of local volunteer time.
As part of the training, participants will:
- Make their own worm bin and green cleaning kit
- Join a team to build a compost pile and compete in the Hot Pile Contest
- Tour a transfer station, worm farm and compost demonstration site
- Build soil tilth
- Be invited to attend social MCR gatherings and enrichment opportunities
A draft syllabus is available at https://canvas.instructure.com/courses/1107031.
Participants who successfully complete the program are certified as Master Composter/Recyclers and become waste reduction ambassadors for the Clark County community. Graduates are asked to contribute 30 volunteer hours within a year to “pay back” their free training.
“Over the years, our Master Composter/Recycler volunteers have provided extraordinary service to the community,” said Pete DuBois, Master Composter Recycler coordinator. “They exemplify environmental stewardship in diverse and remarkable ways.”
