The regulations governing service animals and pet dogs within food service establishments are complex. Pet dogs may be allowed in certain areas of Level 1 food service establishments with pre-approval but are never allowed in Level 2 or 3 food service establishments unless they are a trained service animal. Clark County Public Health (CCPH) has partnered with food industry leaders, non-profits, and other agencies to offer support to food service owners/operators and the public. Dogs in outdoor areas of a food establishment
Since 2005, Washington State Administration Retail Food Code (WAC 246-215) has restricted animals from the premises of a food establishment. However, effective March 1, 2022, pet dogs, under the control of the dog owner, may be allowed in some outdoor areas where food preparation does not occur. Washington State Department of Health has a guidance document with the criteria to allow Pet Dogs on Premises. Please contact your local food safety inspector if you are interested in this option.
