Vancouver, WA – An open house this month will give residents a chance to provide input on a proposed master plan development for the Leichner Campus portion of the closed Leichner Landfill.

The open house is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at the Vancouver Church of Christ, 9019 N.E. 86th St.

Leichner Campus is a 35-acre site south of the closed landfill. The area is flat, has no buried garbage and is zoned for light-industrial development.

The community has been involved in the development of the master plan through two previous open houses in 2014 and 2015

The site’s remaining 74-acres, which encompasses the closed landfill, is part of the master plan, but redevelopment options will be limited for at least five to 10 years because of environmental regulatory constraints.

“Public involvement is a key component of the Leichner Campus development strategy,” said Don Benton, Environmental Services director. “I look forward to hearing from the community.”

The former Leichner Landfill is east of Northeast 94th Avenue and north of Padden Parkway. It was the county’s primary landfill until it was closed in the early 1990s. Today, most of the county’s garbage is barged up the Columbia River 180 miles to Finley Buttes Landfill near Boardman, Ore.
