Lancaster Farm

Body

The Dutch Gambrel-style hay barn was built between 1890-1910. It is a modern truss structure built by the Lindsley family. The hay ban was built for a commercial dairy before WWI and it had a world champion Jersey in 1947. The dairy was inactive from 1948-1953, recovering from the Columbia River flood. From 1953-1964, there was a pure bred Aberdeen Angus herd of over 300 head.

The lower barn was built in 1880 and is post and beam construction with a simple gable roof. Reportedly, it replaced the old Hudson’s Bay Co hay shed and may contain pieces of wood left over from them. The Larson family out of La Center straightened the barn in the 1940’s using bulldozers and cables to pull the barn back together.

  • Listed in the Washington Heritage Barn Register
  • The Columbia Lancaster Home is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
