Vancouver, Wash. – The Clark County Commission on Aging is focusing this year on supportive services, especially for people 50 and older. Research shows 87 percent of people prefer to retire in place and will need a variety of services to remain in their homes as long as possible. Given this, the commission is dedicating nine monthly meetings to raising awareness about what supportive services are available, or could become available, in our community.
Meetings are at 4:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the sixth-floor Hearing Room of the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.
The commission has invited experts to speak on the specific topics below. Members then will discuss the topic and answer questions from the audience.
Here is a schedule of the 2017 topics:
Date | Topic | Date | Topic |
March 21 | Caregiver resources | Aug. 15 | Elder justice |
April 18 | Normal aging | Sept. 19 | Mental health |
May 16 | Home safety | Oct. 17 | Socialization |
June 20 | Pharmaceutical issues | Nov. 21 | Complementary alternative medicine |
July 18 | Home innovation |
The Commission on Aging, supported by the Board of County Councilors, is a nine-member volunteer group that implements the Aging Readiness Plan and provides leadership addressing needs of aging community members.
It was formed in 2012 to help the county put into place 91 strategies identified in the Aging Readiness Plan, a community assessment by a citizen task force. For more information about the commission, please visit www.clark.wa.gov/community-planning/2017-supportive-services-speaker-series-0.
