Writers needed for opposing primary ballot measure statements

The Clark County Elections Office is seeking people to write statements against three measures on the Aug. 1 primary ballot. The statements will be included in the local voters's pamphlet sent out before the election.

Statements supporting the three measures were submitted to Elections for inclusion in the pamphlet, but no one has been identified to write statements opposing the local ballot measures. In such cases, Elections attempts to find people who want to write opposing statements.

The three ballot measures are:

  • A proposed levy lid lift for Clark County Fire & Rescue
  • A proposed excess levy for Clark County Emergency Medical Services District 1
  • A proposed emergency medical services excess levy for the town of Yacolt.

To review the text of the three resolutions, please go to clarkvotes.org and follow the link to the Aug. 1 primary information.

Any county resident interested in writing an opposing statement to one of these ballot measures is asked to contact Cathie Garber, Elections Office, at 360.397.2345. Deadline for volunteering to write the statement is 4 p.m. Friday, May 12.

"The public is best served by having a local voters' pamphlet which presents a fair and balanced debate on the merits of local measures submitted for a vote," said Auditor Greg Kimsey. "We urge anyone interested to help us get their opposing statements to these local measures into the local voters' pamphlet."

Each year, the Auditor’s Office publishes a local voters’ pamphlet for the primary election and mails it to all households in Clark County. It includes statements by and photographs of candidates for elective offices and local ballot measures with supporting and opposing statements written by citizens.

A legislative body placing a measure on the ballot can appoint a committee to write a supporting statement and another committee to write an opposing statement. But often, the Elections Office receives only a supporting argument for a local ballot measure. If the group cannot identify anyone to oppose the ballot measure, no statement is submitted.
